Teradata CPU Planning

I suggested here that Teradata shipped the EDW 6700 series without waiting for Ivy Bridge because they could not use the cores effectively… but it could be that Haswell (see here) fit their release schedule better. It will be interesting to see whether they can use all of the cores then? Continue reading

MPP, IMDB and Moore’s Law

In the post here I listed the units of parallelism (UoP) applied by various products on a single node. Those findings are summarized in the table below. Product Version/HW Cores per Node UoP per Node Notes Teradata EDW 6700H 16 32 Uses hyper-threads. Greenplum DCA UAP Edition 16 8 Recommends 1 Segment for each 2 […] Continue reading

MPP on HANA, Exadata, Teradata, and Netezza

6 May… There is a summary of this post and on the comments here.  - Rob 17 April… A single unit of parallelism is a core plus a thread/process to feed it instructions plus a feed of data. The only exception is when the core uses hyper-threading… in which case 2 instructions can execute more-or-less […] Continue reading

Oracle, I Knew You Were Trouble When You Walked In (to SPECjbb2013)

I’m always on the lookout for anything that helps me eat well. My newest interest these days is a type of rye crisp cracker that looks like cardboard, tastes a bit better, but has absolutely no fat. (They are really good if you put a huge slice of brie on them.) I also love reading […] Continue reading

Intel Corp. announced its Intel Cache Acceleration Software (CAS) for Linux that prioritizes application performance, providing solid-state-drive (SSD) levels of speed without migration costs and built-in data integrity for Intel’s SSD data center family of products.

The Linux version of the software will be generally available within 30 days as an enterprise subscription and open-source release. It will complement the existing Intel CAS 2.0 for Windows that is available today.

A Rebuttal…

This post has been thrown at me a couple of times now… so I’ll now take the time to go through it… and try to address the junk. It starts by suggesting that “the Germans” have started a war… but the next sentence points out that the author tossed grenades at HANA two months before [...] Continue reading

It Really Does Take Two to Tango, Oracle

10x better, 95% reduction, 60x increase. I saw these claims recently in press releases from Oracle. Sounds rather nice. Until you start thinking about what a comparison really is. A comparison involves the consideration of two things. You must have something to compare to something else. In mathematics, an inequality is a relation that holds [...] Continue reading
